One of the most loving women to ever walk this earth, she blessed our family with the embrace of her fierce love. Born in Poland on March 12, 1934, she transitioned through German displaced persons camps, immigrating to the U.S.A. with her parents in 1949.  While a student at Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Md., she met and married John “Jack” Stout. Always the supporting partner, she left college and worked to make it possible for Jack to complete his doctoral studies in Zoology. Their two children, first Ron and then Lynn, arrived during the latter half of this period.

The family then moved to College Place, Wash., where Jack joined the faculty of the Biology Dept. at Walla Walla College and Helena focused entirely on her most cherished roles—as the most incredible mother and wife. The family then transitioned to Andrews University (AU) in Berrien Springs, Mich., via Cologne, Germany, where they reveled in a different culture while Jack pursued postdoctoral studies and research. Early in the families’ 43-year service to the AU students, Helena returned to complete (in 1977) her college degree at AU, specializing in Office Management and Business. She then worked with the Lake Union Conference in support of Literature Evangelism while developing lifelong friendships. This was followed by joining AU’s Student Success Center. She loved serving students, helping them find success in their lives and university programs, and facilitating support by their faculty mentors. Helena also found joy and fulfillment in organizing and coordinating volunteers for Pioneer Memorial Church’s guest ministries and through volunteering at Neighbor to Neighbor, a ministry of Adventist Community Services which provides aide to the needy in the surrounding communities. She shared her generous spirit and welcoming gift of hospitality with everyone!

During later retirement (2017), Helena and Jack followed Lynn and husband, Dan, to Loma Linda where she continued to enjoy special times with her children and grandchildren.

Ted had the unique adventure of starting his life as part of a missionary family (Cleon and Marion) in China, thus encouraging his lifelong pursuit of gospel ministry, mostly as a pastor. His fondness for people and food resulted in attending countless church potlucks over the years (Can anyone say, "haystacks”?). He is survived by his sisters, Cynthia Velting-Kidder, and Cheryl Velting. Inurnment was held in Florida. If you would like to send a gift in memoriam, please send it to your local animal rescue in Bob Velting’s name.

Robert “Bob” Wayne Velting, 64, resident of Eustis, Fla., passed away peacefully on Feb. 20, 2022, at AdventHealth Waterman hospital in Tavares, Fla. He was born Sept. 30, 1957, in Battle Creek, Mich., the son of Wayne and Dixie (Harvey) Velting who preceded him in death.
Bob graduated vice president of his senior class from Battle Creek Academy, Class of 1976. He had posted a saying in his senior yearbook that motivated his life, “Never measure the height of a mountain until you reach the top, then you will see how low it was.” Following graduation, he attended Andrews University, Kettering College, and Loma Linda University, graduating with a degree in Physical Therapy. He practiced physical therapy for 37 years and was beloved by all his patients. He specialized in orthopedics but had experience in all areas of physical therapy while working in various specialties in California, Georgia and Florida. His most current employer was Lake Centre for Rehab where he was employed for 23 years.
Bob had great childhood memories while growing up in Battle Creek. His family was close, and he would tell stories of fun times with grandparents, sisters and cousins while working at the Velting family strawberry farm in Olivet, Mich. Summers were enjoyed by spending time water skiing at Long Lake, camping trips with beloved family friends, and many memories of Michigan camp meetings were relished.
Bob inherited his father’s mechanical talents, and both shared a love of cars. His sister Cheryl said Bob helped her diagnosis and fix many small household repairs by asking her to send him a picture of the problem! He loved music and had played the trumpet in the school band. He was a former member of “Youth for Eternity Singers” and the “Higher Ground Singers.” His music repertoire ranges included classical, southern gospel, country and classic rock. He was a great athlete and enjoyed a variety of physical activities including basketball, flag football, snow/water skiing, hiking and mountain biking.
One of his favorite things in life was riding the “Tail of the Dragon” at Deals Gap on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the mountains of Tennessee with his Uncle Bill and Aunt Jean Harvey. He also dearly loved his special dog named Whisper. She is deaf, and he used sign language to communicate with her. She quickly learned that she could try to ignore his “no” command by turning her head and not looking at him!
He is grieved by his sisters: Cynthia Velting-Kidder, residing in the Detroit vicinity, Mich., and nephew, Austin; Cheryl Velting, residing in Battle Creek, Mich., and nephew, Jacob (wife, Linsey); two great-nephews (Alaric and Maverick); and one great-niece (Mavis).
Bob had a giant smile, infectious laugh, and everyone he met was his friend. He was a compassionate brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, co-worker and dear friend to many. He worked hard, played hard, and God must have allowed for an early retirement. His final message to all those he held dear was scribbled on a paper towel and left, to be found on his kitchen counter: And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you (Eph. 4:32 NKJV).

It was very important to them that their children be brought up in the Adventist school system; they worked and sacrificed to put all three children through SDA elementary school and Highland Academy, and one through college at Southern. He worked for 30 years and retired from Mead Johnson (later Bristol Myers) in 1985. Upon retirement, he and Carolyne moved back to their hometown of Columbia, Mo., joining the Columbia Church, and working both as elder and running the elementary school fruit program. In 2000, they moved to be closer to their daughter in the Asheville, N.C., area, where he worked for many years as a part-time hospital chaplain at Park Ridge (later Advent) Health in Fletcher and was a member of the Hendersonville (N.C.) RUSHER, Patricia (Lewis), age 79; born April 18, 1942, in Corvallis, Ore.; died Jan. 27, 2022, in Mishawaka, Ind. She was a member of the Niles Westside Church in Niles, Mich. Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Paul Pellandini; inurnment held in Mission Hills Memorial Gardens in Niles. Elvina (Haukaas), second husband, Lewis Louis Balos, and sisters Louise Rogers and Rebecca Lewis.

After Patricia completed Laurelwood Academy, she enrolled in Walla Walla College and continued to expand her knowledge. Always sharp as a tack, she worked as bookkeeper for many years in her career and also served as Niles Westside Church treasurer for 17 years.

Patricia married Darrell D. Munroe on Sept. 13, 1964, in College Place, Wash. They divorced after 25 years of marriage but remained friends. She later married Louis Balos at a ceremony in Niles, and they enjoyed over 16 years of marriage until his passing in 2006, but she again found love and companionship in Max Rusher. They wed on Aug. 1, 2008, at a ceremony in Berrien Springs, Mich.

Throughout her life, Patricia has enjoyed a host of activities. During the early part of her marriage to Darrell, Patricia and her family would pack up and travel out west for several months during the summer to catch up with family. Traveling continued to be a part of her life; she enjoyed trips south on the motorcycle and all over the states of Michigan and Indiana many times, accompanied by friends. When she wasn’t off on an adventure out of state, she stayed busy here in Michigan; she wasn’t a woman who let grass grow under her feet. She was a skilled both in crochet as well as in crossstitch, even winning top prize in the Cass County Fair for one of her works. She took great pride in the labors of her canning and was an outstanding cook and baker. Pat’s specialties, Sam’s Chicken and veggie burgers, certainly will be missed by her family and friends who had the great enjoyment of sitting at the dinner table, enjoying the meal and her company. And who can forget her strawberry jam?

A woman who had both an open and generous heart, she welcomed both family and friends to join her in a game of Sorry, Dominoes or Yahtzee, and was involved in reaching out beyond the four walls of her home.

Preceding Patricia in passing are her parents, John and S. Elvina Lewis, her husband, Louis Balos, and her sisters, Louise Rogers and Rebecca Lewis.

SCHROEDER, Jessie L., age 94; born July 21, 1927, in LaValle, Wis.; died July 26, 2021, in Elk Park, N.C. She was a member of the Roan Mountain Church in Roan Mountain, Tenn. Survivors include her sons, Roger (Elaine) Schroeder, Ronald (Annette) Schroeder, Harold “Harry” Schroeder; daughter, Joanne (Bruce) White; 10 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Interment was held at the Oakland Adventist Church Cemetery in Wisconsin.

Jessie was married to Harold Otto Schroeder, Oct. 29, 1944, in a quaint church in Ironton, Wis., at the age of 17. She met Harold when she was 13 at camp meeting in Wisconsin. Harold would park his car near the water fountain. As Jessie’s mother would say later, Jessie nearly drowned herself that year going to the drinking fountain for a drink so often. Jessie told her mom she had met the man she was going to marry. Four years later, she did marry Harold. Together, Harold and Jessie were truck farmers for 57 years in the township of Oakland, Wis., until Harold’s death in 2003. At that time, her daughter took her to North Carolina. There Jessie had a little home of her own that she loved, nestled in the mountains.

Jessie gave up her dream of being a teacher to raise her four children. Instead, she was a very good teacher as she raised her children to love the Lord. She continued to teach through the stories she told every Sabbath in her little church in the mountains or when she visited her former church family in Wisconsin.

Mother loved the Lord with all her heart and passed away with the blessed hope that, when the Lord returns, she will be raised up to spend eternity with Jesus.

He was married to his wife, Mary Alice, for 67-1/2 years. They met in 1949 and married in 1954, the day after they both graduated from Emmanuel Missionary College (now Andrews University). They both later went on to receive master’s degrees from Andrews University. Glenn served the Seventh-day Adventist Church for 41 years. He served as a pastor 33 of those years in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Arkansas, before retiring the first time. From 1980 through 1988, he served as a departmental director in the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

Retirement gave Glenn and Mary Alice the opportunity to pursue international evangelism. He held 55 series of meetings in various international locations, including India, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Siberia, Cuba, Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, the Philippines, Ghana and Zimbabwe. Glenn and Mary Alice also traveled to many locations inside the United States, serving as tour guides for Messiah’s Mansion, a life-sized replica of the biblical sanctuary described in the book of Exodus. In addition, Glenn served as a part-time pastor in Gentry and Decatur churches following retirement.

Glenn had a lifetime hobby of photography, developing his own slide film and black-and-white photos in a makeshift lab. He also enjoyed family gatherings—especially when they featured live music performed by family members. On the agricultural side, he maintained large gardens, preserving big quantities of corn, applesauce and strawberries, among other things.

As a youth, Glenn’s life was headed in a secular direction until he gave his heart to the Lord at a week of prayer service at Mount Vernon Academy (in Ohio). The words of John 10:10 inspired him to dedicate his life to the Lord and choose a life of ministry. Jesus said, “. . . I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (KJV)

Donations honoring his life of ministry may be sent to Adventist World Radio or The Hope Channel.
