On Feb. 24, the Illinois Conference executive committee voted to remove the interim tag from Lori Aguilera’s title and name her the permanent Education superintendent.

Lori Aguilera has served as the interim since July 1, 2020 after the retirement of Ron Huff. Before serving in the interim role, Aguilera was the associate superintendent.

Aguilera graduated with a degree in Elementary Education from Southern University, received a Master’s in Educational Administration from Austin Peay University, and a Master’s in Special Education from Johns Hopkins University.

She has taught regular education in 2nd grade, 3rd grade, Junior High, High School English, been a girl’s dean, academy administrator, and served as professor at Columbia Union College, Pacific Union College, Southern Adventist University. An author, she was written two books, "The Learning Disabilities Handbook" and "Reading Comprehension Strategies" as well as produced a DVD entitled "Understanding Dyslexia: A Guide for Educators."

Aguilera has taught special education in both the public and Adventist schools, served as the Director of Special Education in the Potomac Conference and the Illinois Conference where she also served as the Associate Superintendent and has currently been elected as the Superintended of Education. Her passion is to help students reach their full potential.

She's already looking forward to working with students when an associate comes on board next summer. "My true passion is working with students with learning challenges," she says, "and helping their teachers learn what strategies and accommodations will be help their struggling students become more successful in the classroom."
